WORLD IMMUNISATION WEEK, APRIL 24-30.

World Immunization Week – celebrated in the last week of April – aims to promote the use of vaccines to protect people of all ages against disease. Immunization saves millions of lives and is widely recognized as one of the world’s most successful and cost-effective health interventions. Today, there are still 19.4 million unvaccinated and under-vaccinated children in the world.

2017 Campaign objectives
The main goal of the campaign is to raise awareness about the critical importance of full immunization throughout life, and its role in achieving the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals.
As part of the 2017 campaign, WHO and partners aim to:
  • ·         Highlight the importance of immunization as a top global health investment priority.
  • ·         Promote understanding of the action steps required to achieve the Global Vaccine Action Plan.
  • ·         Showcase immunization’s role in sustainable development and global health security.

Expanding access to immunization is crucial to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. Routine immunization is a building block of strong primary health care and universal health coverage—it provides a point of contact for health care at the beginning of life and offers every child the chance at a healthy life from the start.

Immunization is also a fundamental strategy in achieving other health priorities, from controlling viral hepatitis, to curbing antimicrobial resistance, to providing a platform for adolescent health and improving antenatal and newborn care.

GIVE BLOOD, SAVE LIVES….

Donating a unit of blood can save 3 lives
The need for blood is ongoing and must be met every day.
The Dubai Blood Donation Center (DBDC) of the Dubai Health Authority is the major blood bank of the UAE that committed to providing a safe and adequate supply of blood.

The demand for blood is growing faster than the collection rate and DBDC has been requested to have an instant response to the rapid growth in blood demand which is obviously proportionate to the fast growing population of the city along with healthcare facilities.

Dubai Blood Donation Centre received 49,223 donations in 2016
About 450ml of blood is collected at one time, around 10 per cent of a donor’s total blood volume
A whole blood donation takes 8-10 mins
A healthy individual can donate blood every 4 months.
After donation plasma is replaced by the body within hours and platelets within days
Each blood donation may potentially help save up to four lives for those suffering from Thalassemia, Leukemia or road accident victims and many other cases.
Giving blood can help all, with no distinction of gender, race or religion. It is a simple way to contribute to the UAE's Year of Giving campaign.

DO YOU KNOW ABOUT PARKINSON’S DISEASE?

Parkinson’s disease affects the way you move. It happens when there is a problem with certain nerve cells in the brain.

Normally, these nerve cells make an important chemical called dopamine. Dopamine sends signals to the part of your brain that controls movement. It lets your muscles move smoothly and do what you want them to do. When you have Parkinson's, these nerve cells break down. Then you no longer have enough dopamine, and you have trouble moving the way you want to.

Parkinson's is progressive, which means it gets worse over time. But usually this happens slowly, over many years. And there are good treatments that can help you live a full life.

The four main symptoms of Parkinson's are:
-Tremor, which means shaking or trembling. Tremor may affect your hands, arms, or legs.
-Stiff muscles.
-Slow movement.
-Problems with balance or walking.

People usually start to have symptoms between the ages of 50 and 60.

-Usually this disease progresses slowly. Some people live for many years with only minor symptoms.
-Many people are able to keep working for years. As the disease gets worse, you may need to change how you work.
-It is important to take an active role in your health care. Find a doctor you trust and can work with.
-Depression is common in people who have Parkinson's. If you feel very sad or hopeless, talk to your doctor or see a counselor.
-It can make a big difference to know that you're not alone. Ask your doctor about Parkinson's support groups, or look for online groups or message boards.
-Parkinson's affects more than just the person who has it. It also affects your loved ones. Be sure to include them in your decisions.

CHOICES, CHOICES…

Choosing toothpaste might be very troublesome, with so many brands. However always look out for ADA seal, confirming that they have been tested.

If you are lazy in brushing and following your oral care, no toothpaste can save your teeth.

If you have yellow teeth, you can opt for whitening toothpastes which contain mild abrasives that can help to polish them and prevent future buildup of stain. Look for pastes containing modified silicone abrasives for whiter smiles.

If you are cavity-prone or a chocolate lover, then go for mineral fluorides which ADA refers it as a fighter of cavities. Another tip follows “spitting” instead of “rinsing”.

Very sensitive gums or teeth with exposed surfaces may not be because of poor brushing. Opt for toothpastes containing desensitizing ingredients like strontium chloride or potassium nitrate; either may help in easing the pain.

To prevent tartar build-up which is very hard and needs your dentists to scrap it off, won’t just go away with brushing only. Tartar fighting ingredients like pyrophosphate or zinc citrate can prevent your plaque formation that when ignored forms tartar.

If you are denture wearer any regular toothpaste will work for dentures. However you do get solutions or effervescent tablets to clean more effectively.

I hope now you will be able to choose correct toothpaste for healthy and pearly whites.

EVERYONE MAKES MISTAKES MISTAKES WHILE BRUSHING

Very few of us brush our teeth without mistakes. Thankfully, where there is a mistake, there is a solution to fix them.
1. You pick the wrong brush: The thing we insist upon is that a brush should have soft bristles and they should bend to get under the gum. The size of the brush is also important, if you have a small mouth you cannot brush with a bigger head.
2. You go too down on your teeth: Before starting my career as a dentist, even I thought the harder I scrub my teeth, I will see better result. This is why majority of my patients when asked have repeated. They feel they donot reach the teeth surfaces effectively. Plague is a soft material it doesn’t take force to remove it. Replace your dictionary from “scrub” to “massage”.
3. You rush: Never rush while brushing; minimum is two mintutes twice a day. You can watch your daily news while brushing, so you know u havent fallen short.
4. You hold on too long: Change your good toothbrush which you get fond off every 3 to 4 months, or when you see it changing to discoloured, bent and dirty looking. It’s wise not to share toothbrushes with anyone else, even it be someone you love.
5. You go back and forth:  You are not marching like military people left and right. Again think about massage, not scrub. Starting from your gum line go up-and-down and in circular motions. If you don’t do it right you can end up damaging.
6. You forget the gum line: Bacteria loves your pockets, pockets are where your tooth meets your gum. We miss it during brushing; bristle should be able to bend. Use the angle at 45 degree while brushing. And lastly don’t miss your tongue and roof of your mouth.
7. You go in too soon: New Year celebrations are around the corner, you have nice cosy dinner. Then you remember your dentist in mind, pushing you to brush. Well here it is better to brush than not doing it at all but it’s quite too soon, you have the acids from the food still in your mouth and you are basically helping to erode away your tooth. Wait for 15 to 20 minutes to let your saliva do the work, then your ready to go.
8. You don’t make one time wonderful: Burshing is boring right. You start with your right side by the time you reach the other end; you tend to get lazy or just in a hurry to finish it off. So to make it exciting, start with different sides each day, you will participate more in your brushing techniques. Go through brushing flossing and rinsing, it will do wonders.

FOLLOW SIMPLE 8 STEPS OF BRUSHING

Brushing your teeth is definitely essential when taking care of your mouth.

1.      Before you brush you should floss to get to places your toothbrush bristles cannot reach. Flossing should be always a part of your oral care routine.

2.      While brushing, position the brush on 45° angle toward your gum line. Circular strokes will do the trick, particularly in removing plaque. Your dental history as well as your own dental needs will be considered to determine the right brushing technique. Mostly Modified Bass Technique* is recommended.

3.      Use Fluoride toothpaste.

4.      Brushing should be long enough for 2 minutes. Brush at least twice a day.

5.      If brushing hard is your habit it's time to change it, you should always brush gently. Hold your brush with just two fingers to help you get an idea of how gentle you should brush.

6.      Whitening tooth pastes are for everyone. These particles do whiten your teeth but they scratch your teeth's surface to remove the stains.

7.      Improper brushing can lead to abrasion and recession at your gingival level.

8.       Avoid brushing right after a meal. Instead, wait at least 30 minutes since the ph. in your mouth is still low and acidic. However, if your brush isn’t nearby, you can simply eat crunchy fruits and vegetables to clean your teeth the natural way.

WHAT’S IN YOUR MOUTH?

Good oral health is beyond brushing and flossing. You need to know what is inside your mouth in order to take good care of it.

You mouth has many more components than just teeth, so keeping good oral hygiene does not only mean brushing and flossing. Your mouth is made up of gums, oral mucosa, your lower and upper jaw, tongue and salivary glands. All these structures are examined by a dentist when you visit him/her. So it means even you need to actively take part in maintaining your oral health.

Let’s go a little deeper in your mouth!

When you open your mouth you don’t just see teeth everywhere. There is an oral mucosa inside. The lining of your inner ear and nose is also mucosa. It protects your mouth from germs.

Then we have the gums which provide support to your teeth. If you don’t have healthy gums, they will bleed when brushing or even by a slight irritation. If not taken care you can even loose your precious pearls. The strongest bone is your lower jaw (TMJ) which is not attached to your skull, helps you to chew and talk.

So look out for jaw clicking sounds when you open and close your mouth. The clicking sounds may come from Temporo-mandibular joint (TMJ). The powerful muscle in your body is your tongue. We need healthy tongue to eat, talk and swallow food. Here you have to look out for any tongue ulcers or diseases. When you get hungry or smell some delicious food what happens. Yes! You salivate. This is because of glands in your mouth. You have three sets of salivary glands. They help to keep your mouth moist, help in chewing; swallowing and most importantly protect your teeth and gums by rinsing away the food particles.

Next time you look yourself in the mirror, open your mouth and look out for these structures. Have A Healthy Mouth!

REPELLING A DENTIST

Look around and you will see people who run away from dentists, where as there is another group who look forward to physicians. Are these dentists really that scary? Most dental procedures are not that painful. But the idea of being checked by a dentist can be stressfull. So let’s see by the end of this which category do you fall in.

For certain people they can live with an anxiety about visiting a dentist, but people with dental phobia the thought itself is terrifying. For this reason these people will in fact do anything and everything to avoid a dental appointment. A phobia by definition is an intense and unreasonable fear. Being a dentist even I can suffer anxiety on a dental chair, but the main aim is to tackle it with patience and learn more about it, so you can beat against it.

Some studies have concluded that up to 75% of people surveyed have at least a little fear about dental visits. Dental anxiety and phobia being extremely common do not mean the same thing. Those with anxiety will have an unfound fear, a sense of discomfort and not being easy, where as dental phobia is something that can be described as a terror, intense fear or panic striken.

People with dental phobia will have high risk of early tooth loss and gum diseases. There is often a serious loss of self-esteem as they will have discoloured damaged teeth, leading to affect their personal and professional life. They will smile less often and talk with their mouths closed. People with phobia in general will suffer from poorer health and can be found associated with life threateneing conditions such as heart diseases.

Dental phobia like any other mental conditions can be treated. Without proper medical assistance any phobia can get worse in time. There are varying reasons for this like pain. This is because of their first visit to a dentist under the title of being “pain-free” or a negative past experience. People might feel that they have no control of their of movements on the chair and start feeling helpless about it. They may feel they cannot see what’s going on around them. Mouth being the most personal and intimate part of the body, people might get embarrased or ashamed to let it be examined by a stranger, during a dental treatment the dentist face may be a few inches away causing the uneasiness.

Not to worry about as everyone copes with their fears and anxities in different ways. You might not have a comfortable sleep a day before your appointment, getting nervous while you are in the waiting room, the sight of instruments arranged on the dental unit or the white coat itself can terrify you or even the thought of instruments in your mouth might leave you breathless.

If any of the above tells about you. You must inform your dentist about it. Tell them about your fears, concerns and feelings. Your dentists will listen to you openly and will be very kind enough to change the way you need to be treated. After all, we dentists want a smiling world around us.

WORLD SIGHT DAY

It was originally initiated by the “Sight-First-Campaign” of Lions Club International Foundation in 2000.

It has been unified into VISION 2020 and is created by IAPB (International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness.) in cooperation with the World Health Organization.

The theme for World Sight Day 2016 - to be held on October 13, 2016 - is "Stronger Together".

World Sight Day is a special annual day of awareness that is celebrated around the world each year in order to focus on blindness and vision impairment.

This day was created by the World Health Organization (WHO) in collaboration with the

A large number of organizations around the world have been involved with World Sight Day for many years.

Approximately 285 million people worldwide live with low vision and blindness.

Of these, 39 million people are blind and 246 million have moderate or severe visual impairment.

90% of blind people live in under-developed or low-income countries.

Yet 80% of visual impairment is avoidable - i.e. readily treatable and/or preventable

Restorations of sight and blindness prevention strategies are among the most cost-effective interventions in healthcare

The number of people blind from infectious causes has greatly reduced in the past 20 years.

An estimated 19 million children are visually impaired

About 65 % of all people who are visually impaired are aged 50 and older, while this age group comprises only 20% of the world's population.

Increasing elderly populations in many countries mean that more people will be at risk of age-related visual impairment.

Awareness is spread through a large number of different events.

Some people choose to show their support by planting trees, while other people get involved by submitting a photograph that will be used to create an international photograph montage focusing on the theme of blindness.

Other activities that take place on this day include special fund raising walks to help cover the costs of operations, book readings for the blind and a number of booklets and posters that are created in order to raise awareness of the issue.

FATHER'S DAY 2016

Father’s Day is right here, let’s put some focus on dad’s health.

Dads don’t complain about their health or seek advice from professionals on how to stay healthy.

This Father's Day, give your dad another reason to celebrate by helping him to be healthy.

Health tips for dad are:

1. Get regular screenings and tests – Don’t postpone or neglect your regular exams, tests and screenings. This becomes even more critical especially after 50-65. With regular exams, your doctor will be able to get a better picture of your overall health and any changes that might have occurred and provide recommendations and care as needed. Ask your doctor what needs to be checked out based on your age and health history.

2. Diet and work out – You’ve probably heard it a 1000 times but a diet and exercise can affect your health and reduce chances of conditions including diabetes, heart attack, and obesity. Make sure he does 30-60 minutes of exercise every day of the week and include some strength exercises, too.

• Zinc

Helps prevent erectile dysfunction and male infertility. Also maintain a healthy prostate. Food sources include pumpkin seeds, sesame seeds and oats and mushrooms. Blending seeds with your other favorite ingredients for a smoothie provides protein as well as a good amount of zinc. Safe dosage for consuming supplements is 40 mg or less; taking more than 40mg can cause toxicity in the body.

• Iron

Men high iron can result from eating too much liver, pork and beef or fortified cereals. Be sure to take multi-vitamins specifically for men as they will have lower amounts of iron or none at all. High amounts of iron are associated with higher risk of heart disease, liver disease, and cancer among other health issues. It is important for men to test their iron levels in the body through the following two blood tests called "serum ferritin" and "transferrin saturation." Both tests are necessary to determine an accurate reading.

• Healthy Fats

Eat salmon, walnuts and flax seeds (ground up and put in a smoothie or sprinkled in cereal) to increase the amounts of omega-3 fatty acids in the body – a factor in a lowered risk of cardiovascular disease and high cholesterol. Avoid transfats from junk foods and fried foods associated with inflammation in the body and increased risk of heart disease.

3. Listen to body – Often dads will put off going to the doctor or hospital. Don’t be a hero and listen to your body. If something seems off and you are not feeling yourself, contact a doctor. It’s better to be safe than sorry.

4. Limit or avoid alcohol and never use tobacco – The effects of tobacco and alcohol have been proved. In moderation, wine and even beer has been shown to have some heart health benefits. Best is to limit alcohol consumption or drink in moderation. On the other hand, tobacco use in every form and usage level is bad. There are programs and medications available to you to help you quit this costly and life-shortening habit.

5. Good sleep – Good sleep can make all the variations in our functionality, attitude, energy level and health. Sleep is important for recharging the body’s systems. Serious conditions like sleep apnea exist and the more weight you carry, especially around your stomach area can affect your health. Losing weight can help reduce these risks.

As an added bonus to a healthy lifestyle, don’t forget to get plenty of fresh air.

Happy Father’s Day!!!
